Special effects have had a huge impact of films and the film industry. In my personal opinion, I believe that without special effects the film industry would not be as successful as it is and people would not be as interested in watching film as they are.
What is your opinion?
Do you think movies need special effects?
Or is it just something that adds to a film?
I think today, society is so obsessed with these superhero and action flicks and because of that, there is a high demand for mind-blowing special effects. It's not like the 50s where a movie can have no special effects, rely heavily on dialogue, and have huge success in the box office. Especially now that Marvel Avengers has become an excuse for Hollywood to create an expansion of superhero movies, the CGI work has to continue developing in order to make each Marvel movie more visually stunning than the last one.
ReplyDeleteAs an avid horror movie watcher, I've noticed that the best movies are those NOT with 1000 jump scares and gory scenes, but those with the most complex plotlines, such as The Shining (originally written by Stephen King). However, I think special effects add to a film to make it more entertaining to watch. In the action genre, special effects play a major part in creating suspense and amazement for the audience. Especially in superhero movies such as Thor and Iron Man, the effect on the audience would be much less profound if they didn't use special effects.
ReplyDeleteI believe the film industry is always going for the 'next big thing' - and after The Matrix came out, the industry started to ramp up its obsession with special effects. Though the special effects in today's films are thrilling (and sometimes make a whole film what it is), I see special effects as turning back into add-ons to films due to the industry starting to go for 'realism' again (i.e. the introduction of 4k).
ReplyDeleteNot that effects will diminish in significance (films are all about 'escaping life', after all) but rather not be part of every single frame of a film (such as in some modern films). I personally like films that don't over-indulge on special effects, as I see them as add-ons.
I'm not completely sure of everything that falls under special effects, but I think it's fairly obvious that not all great movies have special effects. Most of my favourite films don't really rely on special effects at all. There are a lot of wicked movies out there with special effects, but I don't feel that film should rely on them. Like Josh said, movies with more complex story lines, and I feel more emotionally and intellectually stimulating story lines, are the ones that are ten to be the most successful (to the viewer). Mind you, there are exceptions to this. I could see this also having somewhat to do with budget. It's easy to assume that most writers and film makers don't include huge or cool action sequences because they're trying to set up realistic expectations, but it's cool when movies have the opportunity to implement both an awesome engaging story and some wicked visuals alongside. An example could be Inception.
