Looking at earlier films, it is clear that the lead female characters are often gorgeous young women, however they do use makeup as well, it is not the most noticeable makeup job in the production. Looking at Planet of the Apes from 1968, the makeup for this film is extremely advanced for its time. They were able to turn a young female lead into an ape that still, in their own way, had sex appeal.
This makeup compared to today's is still rather impressive. Today there are so many films that are based on science fiction or fantasy that are in need of special effects makeup, that it has evolved in a way that people in the past would never have believed. Looking at How the Grinch Stole Christmas from 2000, not only is the Grinch covered in makeup and false hair, but all of the Who's have prosthetic noses and facial features as well. This film shows how the makeup can be both subtle and extreme.
Makeup is not limited to changing an appearance completely though. Sometimes it is used to create wounds and this can have a huge impact on a film. In The Hunger Games from 2012, makeup is used in many ways and can show viewers how important special effects makeup is. There is the use of makeup to give the people in the districts a pale, sickly complexion, there is the makeup of the people in the capital that can change their entire look (such as the character Effie who's overall appearance changes from day to day) and there is also the use of makeup to create the appearance of injuries.
Special effects makeup has even come so far as to have a fan base solely on creating makeups. This is seen on a television show called Face Off in which special effects makeup artists compete against each other for having done the best makeup job.
